Roaster's Notes There's a lot going on with this bean! This washed Gesha has tropical fruit acidity, solid sweetness and a supple texture. There are layers to this dense coffee.

A bit about Gesha coffee It is a rare and highly sought-after variety of coffee that originated in the Gesha village of Ethiopia. However, in recent years, it has gained popularity in other countries, including Colombia. Colombian Gesha coffee is known for its delicate and complex flavor profile, which includes notes of jasmine, bergamot, and tropical fruits. It has a light body and high acidity, making it a favourite among coffee enthusiasts. The cultivation process for Colombian Gesha coffee is meticulous, with farmers carefully tending to the plants to ensure the highest quality beans. Because of its rarity and unique flavour profile, Gesha coffee is often more expensive than other types of coffee.

A bit about Angel Ortega A second-generation coffee grower from San Agustin, Huila, started his journey in coffee as a teenager, working alongside his father and brother, Augusto Ortega. In 1985, he ventured out on his own, planting 10,000 trees of the Colombia variety in an area previously devoid of coffee due to arid soils. Initially selling his coffee "en verde" due to limited local buyers for parchment-dried coffee, Angel later joined a coffee growers union in 2000, exploring specialty coffees and European markets.

In 2018, Don Angel achieved microlot sale of coffee under his own name but he always felt felt distanced from his roaster clients, and even the importers who purchased his coffees. He hopes to continue to improve his coffee quality, but has brought his lots Monkaaba and Semilla this year for the first time due to their commitment to pay him the highest prices he has ever received, up front and without delay, and to stay in close contact with him about the final destination of his coffee.

We access this coffee via Semilla Coffee Importers and Advocacy in Montreal. Learn more about Semilla’s partnership with with the Monkaaba program in Colombia here!
